Background

This case study was completed for the Google UX Design Professional Certificate. The project focused on addressing a common problem for CinemaPlus, a movie theater chain: customer frustration with waiting in line to buy tickets. The goal was to design a mobile app that would allow users to quickly and easily purchase tickets, improving their overall movie-going experience. The final product is an app that prioritizes ease of use and efficiency, catering specifically to time-conscious moviegoers.

Process

Research and planning

User research involved interviews and empathy mapping to better understand the needs of working young adults. Major pain points included the inconvenience of long ticket lines, challenges with selecting adjacent seats for groups, and frequent disappointments with show availability at the theater. These insights informed early design decisions.

Design and Prototyping

Initial designs included paper and digital wireframes, emphasizing a clear, intuitive user flow. The main features centered around easy ticket selection, including date and seat choice, and options for pre-ordering snacks. A low-fidelity prototype allowed for initial usability testing of the ticket-buying experience.

Solution

Seamless Ticket Selection

Users can quickly choose movie dates, times, and seats, with a focus on ensuring that groups can sit together.

Snack Pre-Ordering

To further streamline the theater experience, users can add snacks to a cart before checkout, minimizing the need to stand in line for concessions.

Location Selection

A clear option for selecting or changing the theater location helps users find the most convenient showtimes based on where they are.

Accessible Design Elements

Alt text for screen readers and high-contrast colors enhance accessibility, ensuring the app is usable for all audiences.

Results

Improved User Flow and Satisfaction

Usability testing revealed that the app’s ticket selection and snack pre-ordering features significantly improved the user experience, addressing initial frustrations with long lines and limited seat availability. Users responded positively to the intuitive flow, which made purchasing tickets faster and more enjoyable.

Enhanced Accessibility and User Inclusivity

Accessibility adjustments, including alt text for images and high-contrast color schemes, made the app more inclusive for users with vision impairments. This focus on accessibility not only broadened the app’s appeal but also aligned with best practices for user-centered design, ensuring a seamless experience for all users.
